Budgerigars, or budgies, are small parrots sporting a long tapered tail. A budgie is always a parakeet but a parakeet isn't always a budgie. Their small bodies are packed with a huge personality. Budgies are very playful and mischievous and in most cases, easily tamed.

In a multi-budgie household, these birds usually form friendships with other budgies (besides that special mate). The budgie friends may "hang out" together, devising little games to play for their entertainment.

Of course, that special relationship with the mate is a close one. When one of the birds is sick, the other is right there beside it much of the time. Sometimes, budgies are inconsolable when a mate dies, even if it was sick for a long time. The bonds between budgies are strong.

For those who've never had a budgie, a unique experience awaits, unlike the experience with birds of other species. Budgies have "special" calls that may sound to us like the bird is mad or alarmed, or is warning of danger ahead. But, the call makes perfect sense to the other budgies in the household!

Then, one budgie may become a "lecturer," communicating with other budgies. Maybe they are hearing an interesting conversation!
